About Archipelago Sokotra

Socotra or Soqotra (Arabic سُقُطْرَى ; Suquṭra) is a small archipelago of six islands (Socotra, Abd al Kuri and Samha have habitants) in the Indian Ocean near Somali coastal line. It lies off some 380 kilometres south of the Arabian Peninsula.
Socotra is one of the most isolated landforms on Earth of continental origin (i.e. not of volcanic origin). Is a part of Hadramaut province (the archipelago is territorially divided on two «mudirias» (areas): Hadiboh (with the centre in Hadiboh) and Kalansiya and the Abd al Kuri (with the centre in Kalansiya) Republic Yemen.
Archipelago consists of main island Sokotra, island Abd al Kuri, two islets under one name "Al Ihvan" ("Brothers") - Samha, Darsa - and two rocks Sabuniya and Kal Farun.
Socotra is a pearl of Yemen and all Arabian region. Thanks to the unique nature which has remained since prehistoric times, Socotra attracts not only scientists and experts, but also fans of productive leisure and eco-tourism.

Nature

The main island has three geographical terrains: the narrow coastal plains, a limestone plateau permeated with karstic caves and the Haghier Mountains.
Socotra is the biggest of all islands, occupies territory of 3625 sq.km. In the east and central parts of island prevail high mountain ridges with the peaked tops leaving in clouds on height of 1570 m. Mountain valleys, frequently hidden from eyes, represent freshening green oases.
Limestone plateaus are opened to all winds, abrupt slopes hang over dry flat coast or directly over waves grasping spirit. Islands Darsa and Samha with their steep rocks reminding majestic castles in the middle of ocean, also are very picturesque. Hills of islands Kal-Farun and Sabuniya covered centuries-old adjournment guano of uncountable waterfowls, are excellent vacation spot and shelters for various sea living creatures.
The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora. Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else.
One of the most striking of Socotra's plants is the dragon's blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari), which is a strange-looking, umbrella-shaped tree. Its red sap was the dragon's blood of the ancients, sought after as a medicine and a dye, and today used as paint and varnish. Also important in ancient times were Socotra's various endemic aloes, used medicinally, and for cosmetics. Other endemic plant шы the giant succulent tree Dorstenia gigas.
The island group also has a rich bird fauna, including a few types of endemic birds, such as the Socotra Starling Onychognathus frater, the Socotra Sunbird Nectarinia balfouri, Socotra Sparrow Passer insularis and Socotra Grosbeak Rhynchostruthus socotranus, many endangered by non-native feral cats. There is even an endemic monotypic genus of birds, the Socotra Warbler Incana incana.
As with many isolated island systems, bats are the only mammals native to Socotra. In contrast, the coral reefs of Socotra are diverse, with many endemic species.

Infrastructure

In two ends of island Socotra majestic rocks - Ras Mummi in the east and Ras Bidu in the west tower. Most likely Apostle Foma in 53 year has suffered ship-wreck in Mummi during the travel to India and, remained on island, christened its inhabitants who remained Christians till 19 century.
Today islands still keep charm of an antiquity, after all their most part has a little changed from the moment of occurrence of the first travellers. Far from capital vanity of Hadiboh the mountains covered bosvellias, dragon blood trees and other mysterious plants are waiting for the researchers.
For fans of beach rest there are virgin-pure sand coasts, for naturalists – rocky coast with numerous representatives of flora and fauna, and for scuba-divers and snorkeling fans – the rich underwater world and the mysterious sunk ships, some of which are accessible to recreational diving, like "Sunset".

You can study caves, and also go for a fishing boat rides and plough island on camels. Each fan of the nature and adventures will find here something for itself.
Hadiboh is quiet dirty and noisy city. But in 20 minutes of walking to the east there are two valleys where it is possible to see the greatest quantity of birds and whence it is possible to enjoy the most beautiful sunsets.
Adventurers should make walk on mountains Hager. It is necessary to climb up the ridges covered with woods, cross fantastic canyons, go down to hilly pastures, and again climb up the bared rocks. From here it is possible to see how the sun slowly comes below the horizon, and dome-shaped hills disappear in its last beams. And in the morning you will wait unforgettable sunrise...
